“My best friends, Cha, Angel, and Djoannah, have always had my back and seriously make the greatest hype women ever. If it weren’t for them, I would have never been able to step out of my comfort zone and get comfortable in front of the camera.”
Creative Spotlight: Jannel Reyes, Make Up Artist, Vlogger
For this creative spotlight, I interviewed Jannel Reyes, a beautiful, funny soul – and talented, talented makeup artist! With her passion for makeup, she continues everyday to inspire her family and friends around her, not to mention all of her followers on Instagram and YouTube.
Here’s one of her latest videos:
Let’s get to know you! Describe your best self in one sentence. (Yes, you can have lots of commas and “ands.”)
Hey, what’s up, my name is Jannel and I love playing with makeup, hugging dogs, drinking coffee, spending hours on end watching old episodes of my favorite show, Friends, making my boyfriend laugh cause he’s so cute, and hanging out with my best friends because they’re secretly comedians/singers who also do stunts on the side… Jk lol.
Tell me about being a makeup enthusiast, what’s your mission? Tell me about your purpose!
My purpose is to inspire, teach and engage with others by posting makeup tutorials and reviews on YouTube, sharing pictures of my work on Instagram, giving my thoughts on all things beauty on Twitter, and giving my viewers an inside look into my everyday life via Snapchat.
My message to my fellow beauty addicts is that although every single one of us has different features, whether it’s our bone structure, eye shape, etc., these differences should never limit us from experimenting and having fun with makeup. Instead, we should find ways to highlight these features and celebrate our uniqueness.
Name 3 people who inspire you to keep your project going.
It’s hard to choose just 3, so I’ll bend the rules a bit and group my first choice.
– My best friends, Cha, Angel, and Djoannah, have always had my back and seriously make the greatest hype women ever. If it weren’t for them, I would have never been able to step out of my comfort zone and get comfortable in front of the camera.
– My boyfriend, Michael, inspires me to keep going because he is so supportive and uplifting in every step of the way. I also appreciate his outlook on life, which contrasts mine and challenges me to view things differently.– Lastly, I turn to myself to gain inspiration because if I never decided to work on my self-confidence, learn how to love myself and pick myself up when I’m down, I would have never learned how to deal with any negativity online and how to stay positive in order to keep my project going.
How do you like to start your day?
I like to start my day by looking at Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for makeup inspiration. A lot of scrolling, hashtag surfing, liking, following, subscribing, brainstorming, and screenshotting goes down before I actually hop out of bed.
What are some things that make you feel successful?
Engaging with my followers makes me feel successful because that is the main reason why I decided to become a beauty vlogger: to connect with others and develop a sense of community.
In general, feeling good about what I’m doing, listening to my heart, taking care of my family and friends, and learning to like who I am as a person makes me feel successful.
If you had to give advice to anyone starting their own creative project, what would you tell them?
My best advice is to not pay attention to the numbers (views, likes, etc.) and instead commit to producing the greatest content you can ever make. Numbers will never validate you; hard work, dedication, and passion does.
And just for fun… What would be on your perfect pizza? (I love pizza.)
My perfect pizza, aka Michael’s creation, would have a thin crust, white sauce, chicken, mushrooms, whole pieces of garlic, ricotta cheese, slices of red onion, bacon, Italian sausage, and pesto sauce drizzled on top.
What are you good at? Do you have any special or hidden talents? Don’t be humble now! 🙂
This might be strange to admit, but I’m good at math! I’ve always had a better relationship with numbers versus letters, and I think it’s because I’m dyslexic and had a few speech impediments growing up lol. Math has always been my strong suit.
What’s your current feel good song to put you in a good mood?
Fifth Harmony’s All In My Head (Flex) is my current feel good song because it reminds me of hanging out with my girls and making silly lipsync music videos together.
If you only had one day left on earth, what would you do?
I would throw a 24hr house party with my family, boyfriend, best friends, and dogs, and cook, eat, dance, laugh and hug every single one of them repeatedly.
And finally, living consciously – what does that mean to you?
Living consciously and being mindful means so much to me because it was the one practice that got me out of my darkest times. The saddest thing is losing sight of what you have and what is in front of you, and the best way to avert this is to live in the moment and appreciate everything that comes your way.
